Section Collection Information

Globalization has forced many developing nations to compete with advanced economies sometimes ignoring the specific dispositions of the nation or their region. Similarly, the institutional and economic pressures on those nations to open up trade have put many developing countries in an awkward economic situation. If the countries continue to compete in the globalized economy ignoring their country-specific and regional characteristics they will end up in an economic disadvantage. Unless an even playing field is formed for all participants of the global economy there will always be some nations or even entire regions losing. Accordingly, pressure to catch up with others is forcing some countries to adopt unsustainable practices of resource exploration, production, and consumption which is not only affecting negatively the natural and economic environment of a particular region but also the entire globe.

The Reginal Economy section of Sustainable Economies journal envisions bringing such challenges of regional economies to the surface. By focusing on specific economic aspects of a particular locality the audience of the section can explore distinct features of each country’s or region’s economy. Nonetheless, the preferred focus of the articles submitted for the section should be related to sustainability and environmental economics, while other studies in areas of regional economies such as economic geography, regional development, urban and rural economics, utilization of resources, economic integration, and international trade are also welcome. Manuscripts written on interdisciplinary areas of economics with other social sciences and business studies will be considered as well.
